Starling Bank’s Latest Initiative: Snatch Theft Detector marks a new step in mobile banking security. The new feature aims to protect customers from rising phone snatch thefts across the UK. Starling Bank introduced the optional tool to reduce the risk of criminals accessing bank accounts after stealing a phone. The bank says the feature works automatically while customers use the Starling app.
The Snatch Theft Detector uses a phone’s built-in motion sensors to detect sudden movements that suggest a device has been snatched. If the system detects suspicious motion while the app is open, it immediately locks access. The app then requires the user to verify their identity with facial recognition, a fingerprint, or a passcode before access is returned. This process helps prevent thieves from reaching account information or making transactions.
The bank launched the feature in response to an increase in phone snatching incidents across the UK. Many of these crimes involve organised groups that steal phones from pedestrians while riding bicycles or motorbikes. Criminals often attempt to access banking apps before victims can react. Starling believes its new technology can reduce that risk by blocking access within seconds.
Harriet Rees, Chief Information Officer at Starling Bank, said the company receives regular reports from customers whose phones have been stolen. She explained that the bank wanted to create another layer of protection for users during these incidents. The new detector adds security even if criminals manage to steal an unlocked phone.
The Snatch Theft Detector joins several other security tools already available through the Starling app. Customers can instantly freeze or unfreeze their debit cards with a single tap. They can also set payment limits and block certain transactions through the Account and Security Controls section. In addition, the bank uses multi-factor authentication when customers sign in from a new device or attempt sensitive account actions.
The feature remains optional, allowing customers to enable it according to their own preferences. Starling Bank plans to monitor its technology performance and may expand its capabilities in the future. As mobile banking continues to grow, the bank hopes the Snatch Theft Detector will improve customer confidence and set a stronger standard for digital banking security.
