Starling Bank expands mobile payments with Tap to Pay, a feature that allows businesses to accept contactless payments directly on an iPhone. The service eliminates the need for card readers, allowing merchants to accept payments more quickly and in additional locations. Starling aims to make payment collection simpler for small businesses, sole traders, and mobile sellers.

The bank charges no monthly fee or subscription cost for the service. Businesses also do not need to rent or buy hardware. Instead, Starling applies a 1.6% fee on each transaction. The approach lowers upfront costs and makes digital payments more accessible for growing companies.

Business customers can receive money quickly. Starling transfers funds into a business account on the next working day after a Tap to Pay transaction is processed. This faster access to cash flow can help businesses manage daily operations more efficiently.

The feature allows merchants to accept payments almost anywhere. Vendors at markets, pop-up events, and mobile locations can process transactions using an internet connection through WiFi or mobile data. Customers can complete the payment by holding a contactless card or payment device near the top of the merchant’s iPhone.

Setting up the service is straightforward. Users need a Starling business account before enabling Tap to Pay on iPhone. After activation, merchants can open the Starling app, enter a transaction amount, select “Charge,” and present the phone for payment. A confirmation checkmark appears when the card read is complete, and the transaction enters processing.

Starling also highlights security. Apple does not store card numbers or PIN information on its servers when payments are processed. The measure helps protect customer and merchant data.

Beyond payments, Starling offers a range of business management tools through its app. Customers can create invoices, manage bookkeeping tasks, submit VAT returns, and use Making Tax Digital features. The platform also includes budgeting tools, spending insights, expense cards, bulk payments, and integrations with accounting software such as Xero and QuickBooks.

By combining banking, payments, and administrative tools into one platform, Starling Bank positions itself as a digital-first partner for businesses seeking greater flexibility and efficiency.
