Revolut Calls for Meta to Share Reimbursement of Fraud Victims, urging the parent company of Facebook and Instagram to take responsibility for compensating those affected by fraud originating on its platforms. In its latest Consumer Security and Financial Crime Report, Revolut reveals that 62% of all scams reported in the first half of 2024 linked back to Meta platforms, with Facebook being the primary source of these fraudulent activities.

Revolut‘s Head of Financial Crime, Woody Malouf, criticizes Meta’s recently announced data-sharing initiative with UK banks and financial institutions, stating that it “falls woefully short” of the global effort needed to combat fraud. He emphasizes that the initiative shifts too much responsibility onto financial institutions to report scams, while Meta fails to invest adequately in monitoring its services. Malouf also highlights that the program focuses only on the UK, despite fraud being a global issue that affects consumers and businesses worldwide.

The report shows that Facebook accounts for 39% of scams reported to Revolut, more than double that of WhatsApp (18%) and Telegram (12%). Purchase scams remain the most common type of fraud, impacting 60% of victims globally, while job scams have surged from 9% at the end of 2023 to 18% by mid-2024.

Although Meta’s Fraud Intelligence Reciprocal Exchange (FIRE) pilot program claims to have removed 20,000 scam accounts in partnership with UK banks, Revolut argues that this initiative lacks sufficient action. The company insists that Meta must commit to reimbursing victims of fraud occurring on its platforms, as financial institutions cannot shoulder this burden alone.

“These platforms share no responsibility in reimbursing victims, and so they have no incentive to take meaningful action,” Malouf asserts. He stresses that while data sharing is essential, it does not address the root of the problem.

Revolut Calls for Meta to Share Reimbursement of Fraud Victims comes ahead of new UK regulations set to take effect in October 2024. These regulations will require banks and payment firms to reimburse fraud victims up to £85,000. Revolut advocates that Meta and other social media companies should step up and share the responsibility of protecting consumers from fraud on a global scale.
